Clotrimazolum Aflofarm cream is an antifungal medicine that contains the active ingredient clotrimazole, which kills most of the fungi that cause infection in humans. The mechanism of action of clotrimazole is to disrupt the function and permeability of the fungal cell membrane, leading to cell death. The drug works especially against yeasts and dermatophytes – fungi that attack the skin.

Clotrimazolum Aflofarm is applied topically, usually twice a day, in the case of fungal skin infections, treatment should last at least 4 weeks.

Symptoms

The drug is used in the local treatment of:

  • athlete’s foot, groin, body, skin between the toes, including athlete’s foot with secondary infection (e.g. athlete’s foot) caused by dermatophytes;
  • fungal infections of the skin and mucous membranes of the external genitalia (labia, foreskin and glans) caused by yeasts (also called candidiasis);
  • pityriasis versicolor.

Active substance: Clotrimazole

Composition of Clotrimazolum Aflofarm

1 g of cream contains 10 mg of clotrimazole (Clotrimazole).

Excipients: cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol. For the full list of excipients, see section 6.1.

Use and dosage

Before applying Clotrimazole cream, the skin should be thoroughly washed and dried. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and adjacent area twice a day (morning and evening).

Duration of treatment with Clotrimazole cream:

  • Treatment of fungal infections of the skin – should last not less than 4 weeks, also when the symptoms of the disease disappear. Failure to follow this recommendation may result in recurrence of the infection. Acute symptoms of the disease subside after about a week of using the drug.
  • Treatment of fungal infections of the mucous membranes of the external genitalia – should last from one to two weeks.
Contraindications
  • Hypersensitivity to clotrimazole or to any of the excipients.
  • Children under the age of 11.
  • Kidney failure.
  • I trimester of pregnancy.
  • Do not use the drug vaginally or in the eyes.

Clotrimazole Aflofarm is a white cream. The packaging of the drug is an aluminum tube containing 20 g of cream, in a cardboard box.

Warnings

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Clotrimazole Aflofarm:

  • if you are taking medicines that suppress your immune system (so-called immunosuppressants, used in organ transplant patients or e.g. in atopic dermatitis);
  • if you are receiving chemotherapy;
  • if you have diabetes;
  • if you are infected with HIV;
  • if you are allergic to itraconazole, fluconazole, ketoconazole or miconazole (medicines used to treat fungal infections).

The use of clotrimazole in pregnancy
Clotrimazole Aflofarm must not be used in the first trimester of pregnancy. In the second and third trimester of pregnancy, the use of the drug is possible at the express request of a doctor and only if, in the opinion of a doctor, it is necessary.

Breastfeeding women can use the drug only on the advice of a doctor.

Interactions with other drugs
Clotrimazole may inhibit the effect of polyene antibiotics (nystatin, natamycin) applied externally due to the breakdown of their polyene bonds.

Topical application of glucocorticoids may reduce the effect of clotrimazole.

Side Effects

Occasionally, symptoms of skin irritation may occur, such as: erythema, rash, urticaria, local redness, itching, pimples, swelling or other symptoms of local intolerance to the product and general hypersensitivity reactions.

Such troublesome reactions are grounds for discontinuation of therapy.

Side effects may be caused by the preservative benzyl alcohol contained in the product.
