Nizoral Medicinal Shampoo is intended for the treatment and prevention of dandruff. It is an antifungal medication for topical application to the skin. The medicine contains the active substance ketoconazole.

When to use Nizoral Medicinal Shampoo?

The shampoo is intended for the treatment and prevention of the following skin diseases caused by yeasts of the genus Malassezia (previously called Pityrosporum):

  • dandruff of the scalp (desquamation of the epidermis of the scalp in the form of white, easily separated scales).
  • seborrheic dermatitis (brownish red patches on the chest and face that peel off as white or yellow scales).

The shampoo is also intended in the treatment of:

  • pityriasis versicolor caused by Pityriasis versicolor (small white spots on the skin of the chest).

Active substance: Ketoconazole

Composition
1 g of medicated shampoo contains: 20 mg of ketoconazole.
The other ingredients are: sodium lauryl sulfone ether, disodium monolauryl sulfonate ether, coconut oil fatty acid diethanolamide, laurdimonium – hydrolyzed animal collagen, macrogol 120 methylglucosodioleate, perfume, sodium chloride, imidourea, sodium hydroxide, concentrated hydrochloric acid, sodium erythrosine, purified water. .
Usage

Always use this medicine as described in the package leaflet or as directed by your doctor or pharmacist. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The drug is intended for topical use on the skin in adolescents (over 12 years of age) and adults.

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor, Nizoral medicated shampoo is usually used as described below.

  1. Apply a small amount of shampoo to the infected skin – usually 1 sachet or handful of the drug is enough for a single use (hair can be previously washed with a normal shampoo).
  2. Using a small amount of water, spread the shampoo evenly over the skin. In the case of long hair, it is enough to wash only the scalp.
  3. Rub the shampoo into the skin until it foams.
  4. Leave the foam on the skin for 3 to 5 minutes, then rinse.
  5. You can use regular shampoo every day.

Treatment:

Pityriasis versicolor: use once a day for one day.
Seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff of the scalp: use twice a week for 2 to 4 weeks.

Prevention:

Seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff of the scalp: use once a week or once every two weeks.

Use of the drug in children and adolescents
Do not use in children under 12 years of age. The safety and efficacy of Nizoral medicated shampoo in infants and children under 12 years of age have not been established

When should you not use Nizoral Medicinal Shampoo?

If you are allergic to ketoconazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Warnings

This is medicine. For safety, use it according to the leaflet attached to the package. Do not exceed the maximum dose of the drug. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using Nizoral medicated shampoo.
Consult your doctor even if the following warnings apply to situations in the past.
In case of previous long-term treatment with topical corticosteroids, your doctor will advise you to gradually (over 2 to 3 weeks) withdraw from treatment with topical corticosteroids, in order to avoid worsening of your symptoms when you stop using them. If you stop taking corticosteroids too quickly, your skin may react with redness and itching.
Doubts should be clarified with the doctor.
Contact with the eyes should be avoided. If this occurs, the eyes should be rinsed with water.
Seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff are often accompanied by increased hair loss, which may also occur, although rarely, with the use of Nizoral medicated shampoo.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine. Nizoral medicated shampoo can be used during pregnancy and lactation, when in the opinion of the doctor it is definitely necessary.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The following side effects may occur during treatment with Nizoral medicated shampoo:

Eye irritation and increased lacrimation and hypersensitivity, folliculitis, acne, hair loss, contact dermatitis, dry skin, abnormal hair texture, rash, burning sensation and skin disorder, scaling and taste disturbance may occur uncommonly.

Hives, angioedema and changes in hair color have been reported very rarely (in less than 1 in 10,000 patients) during the marketing of Nizoral medicated shampoo.
